From Big Picture to Daily Action

A Friendly Guide to Hitting Your Goals

Ah, January. That magical “fresh start” energy is everywhere, but let’s be honest: by January 2nd, some of us are already feeling behind. Here’s the thing: your calendar doesn’t dictate your motivation. Every day can be a mini January 1st if you let it. This post is all about creating clarity and turning it into a step-by-step guide for you to plan your year, quarters, months, weeks, and days—so you feel motivated, in control, and aligned every step of the way.

Step 1: Get Clear about Your Values

Before you dive into planning, make sure you’ve clarified your values. If you haven’t yet, check out my previous post on getting clear about your values and creating a personal mantra. Think of your values as your internal GPS for the year: they guide your decisions, your goals, and even your daily tasks. Keep them visible and check in regularly.

Step 2: Reflect on the Past Year for Better Planning

You’ve probably heard this before: Planning without reflection is like setting off on a road trip without checking the map. Take a moment to look at the past year or past months:

  • What worked well?
  • What didn’t?
  • What do you want to do more of, or quit entirely?

Don’t worry if you don’t have a full set of goals yet. Even 1–3 personal or business goals is enough to start planning. The key is progress, not perfection. Celebrate wins, note patterns, and keep doing what energizes you.

Step 3: Plan Your Year, Quarters, Months

Once you have your values ready and are done reflecting, it’s time to structure your time, from big-picture to day-to-day.

Annual Planning: Your Big Picture
  • Include family commitments, school and public holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other major events.
  • Mark big projects, launches, or milestones for the year.
Quarterly Planning: Checkpoints & Reflection
  • Decide what you want to accomplish by the end (or beginning) of each quarter.
  • Schedule time for reflection: review progress, adjust goals, back up important files, and celebrate wins.
Monthly Planning: One Key Focus
  • Ask yourself: If I could achieve just one thing this month, what would it be?
  • Keep it realistic. The goal is to make the month feel successful, not overloaded.

Step 4: Weekly Planning for Focus and Flow

Here’s a confession: I used to try to cram everything into one day. Admin tasks, content creation, social media, marketing… you know the feeling.
So much to do, not sure where to start. Eventually, the overwhelm makes you feel and act busy, but nothing that really moves the needle gets done. You just have too many literal and mental tabs open.

The trick? Prioritize and pace yourself. You don’t have to and simply cannot do everything in one day.

A strategy that changed everything for me was assigning categories to weekdays, meaning I would focus on only ONE area of my business:

  • Monday = CEO day
  • Tuesday = CRM
  • Wednesday = Content
  • Thursday = Marketing
  • Friday = Art

Now it looks a bit more manageable, right? This keeps me focused, reduces overwhelm, and makes each week feel structured yet flexible. So this blog post? Yep. Written and scheduled on a Wednesday. And no, this does not mean that I only create on Fridays, I have a daily routine for that as well.

Step 5: Daily Planning Tips

Daily planning is your secret weapon. Even five minutes in the morning to review your values, check your goals, and prioritize tasks can make a massive difference.

Tips for daily planning:

  • Identify 1–3 essential tasks for the day; the rest can wait. Try focusing on tasks from a specific category or “task pillar” for that day (like my dedicated workday themes from above). Give it a shot and adjust it to fit your own workflow—find what works best for you.
  • Make decisions intentionally—avoid randomly jumping between tasks. Your dedicated weekdays can help here: when each day has a focus (like CEO Monday, Content Wednesday, etc.), it’s easier to know what to prioritize and stay on track.
  • Take breaks! I cannot emphasize this enough. I know it’s tempting to skip them when you’re in the flow—those moments count as exceptions—but otherwise, take breaks! I’m a fan of the Pomodoro technique: work in focused chunks, then take short resets to recharge. Use a timer if it helps — I definitely need one.

During breaks, do things that refresh both body and mind:

– Stretching or dancing (especially important if you sit a lot)

– Hydrate (just as important as movement!)

– Look outside your window

– Jot down ideas that pop into your head etc.

Bonus Tips

  • Check and answer emails at the start of your workday, then decide what really needs attention now. The rest can wait until tomorrow—or get discarded entirely.
  • Experiment with working hours and breaks. Try different approaches and see what works best for you. If it works, stick to it. If not, adjust tomorrow.

Conclusion: Start Anytime, Plan Smartly & Realistically

Planning your year doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Break it down from
year → quarter → month → week → day, stay aligned with your values, and take things one step at a time.

Keep it realistic. Be honest with yourself about what you can actually achieve.

The best part? You don’t have to wait for January 1st. Every day is a fresh opportunity to hit reset, reflect, and move closer to your goals. If you like, you can even do a full overhaul. It’s your life, and you decide what to make of it.

Like I said at the beginning, even though the new year has just started, many of us already feel behind and honestly, that feeling has become almost constant these days. (Probably a topic for another blog post, haha.) Don’t freak out about it. If imagining today as a mini January 1st gives you a little extra push, use it. If not, ignore it. One small action today is more than enough.

Know Your Values:
How Getting Clear on What Matters Can Help You Focus, Plan & Stay True to Yourself

 Create your 2026 mantra and move into the new year with more clarity, calm, and purpose

As the year slowly winds down, there’s something grounding about pausing to reflect, not just on what you’ve done, but on why you do what you do. While I shared a step-by-step process last year in this blog post to help you review your year, today’s post is about something even simpler: your values. The qualities, feelings, and guiding lights that shape your decisions, in your creative business and in life.

Reconnecting with what truly matters

At any time of year, but especially now, reflecting on what matters to you can help you come back to center. When you know your values, it becomes easier to make aligned choices, say no without guilt, and stay focused on what brings you joy and meaning.

Think of values as your inner compass. They don’t need to be perfect or profound. They just need to feel true.

You can ask yourself:

  • What has felt most meaningful this year?
  • What did I say YES to that truly lit me up?
  • What felt draining or misaligned?
  • What do I want to feel more of in 2026?

Create your 2026 mantra

As we look ahead to the year to come, I want to offer more than a simple intention—I want to invite a gentle moment of reflection. Below is a mantra format you can use to ground yourself and clarify what matters most to you:

“I honor ______________, I choose ______________, and I celebrate _______________.

I find peace in _____________ and I feel most alive when I _____________________.”

You can fill in these blanks however you like — with words, feelings, actions, or even moments that make you feel connected to yourself.

Here’s a little list to spark ideas:

  • Family
  • Courage
  • Creativity
  • Love
  • Simplicity
  • Rest
  • Curiosity
  • Presence
  • Growth
  • Lightness
  • Connection
  • Joy
  • Discipline
  • Freedom

Feel free to choose just a few that speak to you and build your mantra from there.

Why repetition matters

Once you’ve written your mantra, consider revisiting it regularly. You can print it, write it on a sticky note, or set it as a screensaver.

Daily or weekly repetition helps keep your values top of mind. It becomes easier to notice when you’re drifting away from what matters and just as easy to gently guide yourself back.

Final thoughts

You don’t need a big goal-setting ritual or a full annual review to move into 2026 with intention. Sometimes, a few grounded words and a moment of clarity is all it takes.

Your values are your guide. Trust them, return to them, and let them support you through the busy, beautiful seasons ahead.

So, how can you make the most of it?

Step-By-Step Guide: How to Use Your Habit Tracker

1. Brainstorm Your Habits

Start by thinking about the habits that will benefit your personal and professional growth. What do you want to improve or maintain? Whether it’s daily sketching, journaling, or working out, make a list of the habits that matter most to you.

2. Start Simple & Start Now

Don’t wait for the perfect moment to begin. Start with one, three, or five habits, and dive right in—even if it’s the middle of the month. Small steps matter.

3. Print & Fill In Your Tracker

Printing your tracker can be much more effective than using a digital tool. Having it visible reminds you of your goals and strengthens your commitment. Write down your habits, then start checking them off each day. And don’t forget to mark your weekends for better overview!

4. Reflect & Pivot

Creating your own annual review can be a powerful tradition that helps you celebrate wins, learn from challenges, and set intentional goals for the year ahead. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the benefits of conducting an optimistic annual review and show you exactly how to do it.

Why Do an Annual Review?

Taking the time to reflect on the year isn’t just a “nice-to-have” activity—it’s an essential tool for growth and gratitude. Here are some benefits of an annual review:

Take a moment to remember everything you’ve achieved, both big and small. These wins often fade into the background unless you intentionally revisit them.

By closing one chapter, you open a new one with intention and purpose. It’s a chance to wipe the slate clean and focus on what truly matters. 

Step-by-Step Guide to Your Optimistic Annual Review

Ready to dive in? Here’s how to create your own annual review and making it a meaningful and enjoyable experience:

    1. Block Out Some Time

Set aside a few hours when you won’t be interrupted. Intentionally blocking time for your mind to settle and engage more deeply. The more relaxed you are, the more thoughtful your reflections will be.

    1. Create a Peaceful Space

If you’re doing the review with your family, start by looking at photos together. Later, when it’s time to review your journal or notes, find a tranquil spot where you can focus without distractions. Consider working solo in silence or with calming music in the background. Make it special—pour yourself a cup of tea, light a candle, and get cozy. 

    1. Gather Your Tools

Decide how you want to document your review. Will it be on paper or digital? I personally love starting with a simple pen and paper—there’s something grounding about it. But feel free to use an app or a journaling platform if that suits you better.

Start with a brain dump: write down everything that comes to mind, or create a mind map with categories like “Personal Growth,” “Career,” “Family,” and “Memories.” Highlight the key takeaways when you’re done.

    1. Use Prompts to Get Started

Sometimes, the hardest part is knowing where to begin. These questions can help spark your thoughts:

        • What were your biggest achievements this year?
        • What moments made you feel proud?
        • What brought you joy?
        • What surprised you—good or bad?
        • What’s your favorite memory?
        • What song, book, or movie defines this year for you?
        • What did you learn, and how did you grow?

For a balanced perspective, you can also reflect on challenges:

        • What didn’t go as planned, and what did you learn from it?
        • How can you turn these lessons into growth opportunities?
    1. Review Your Notes and Memories

Pull out your calendar, journal, or planner, and flip through the past year. Look for key milestones, memorable events, and recurring themes. If you keep a success journal, this is the perfect time to revisit it.

    1. Go Through Your Photos

Your photo gallery is a treasure trove of memories. Scroll through your pictures, reliving the moments that made you smile. Pick a few highlights to include in your review—perhaps even print them out for a keepsake album.

    1. Capture the Year on One Page

For a final touch, summarize the year on a single page. Write down the highlights, lessons learned, and key takeaways. You can get creative by adding illustrations, symbols, or even designing a small infographic. If you’re balancing personal and professional reflections, create separate pages for each.

The tagline of this post basically says it all, but let me give you some more information on why I am starting this community: I am on a mission to find out about other Artists’  good habits and workflows – not only related to their creative work but also concerning their personal life. I think learning about best practices of fellow Creatives only can be beneficial because let’s be honest, usually we just get caught up in autopilot and often spend way too much time re-acting rather than acting. It takes some effort to reflect on your day-to-day-routine but once you’re open to experiment a little bit to find a workflow that fits your own individual needs, it can be so much fun as well. So why not try to make things easier and get better together? 

With Create & Live, it does not matter if Art is just a hobby of yours, if you’re just starting to build your creative business or if you’re an established Artist or Designer. No matter your preferred art tools and media, or if you have an Art degree vs. being self-taught like me. 

Create & Live is for you, if you would like to try doing things differently and make an effort to reach your full potential.

How it all started out

Let me tell you how I came up with this idea in the first place.
Having a blog and building a community has been on my list of goals for a couple of years now. I’ve reached a point where I’m just going with my gut, try to be less of an overthinker and put it out there, so here we go: 

I decided to leave my old job and build a creative career in late 2017, during my second maternity leave. Being a mom of two little munchkins, building a one-woman-business from scratch was quite a challenge. But I convinced myself that I could be there for our kids as well as pursue this new found passion of mine.

Of course, especially with small kids, you have to be super flexible, so I often got frustrated with myself wondering, if I could really make it.

I struggled with time management, self-doubt and self-care a lot during these years. At times, I felt that I just needed to “hustle” more to get it all done.

Nah, so wrong!

There were times where I worked until 3-4 am, despite knowing that I would have to get up with our kids only 3 hours later and help them get ready for Kindergarden. I constantly pushed myself but didn’t even get the things done that would have moved the needle. I had super high expectations of myself. It was more like I was haphazardly jumping from one thing to the next, hoping for anything to work out.

Not a good strategy, if any at all!

When I initially had made the decision to really go for it and become a Designer, I had promised to myself that our kids would always come first. And although I’ve had a couple of nervous breakdowns, I am proud to be able to say that they always did and of course always will be. 

At times, there was just too many things to juggle though and I lacked energy immensely. My to-do-list was hilarious and I somehow must have gotten used to being tired all the time. I don’t know how I even got through some of those days, to be honest.

How the idea of Create & Live was born

Given these circumstances, the idea of Create & Live came to me a couple of years ago. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could balance things out better? Be productive yet less stressed out?” You know the phrase “work-life-balance” or “life-work-balance”, right? And since to me work equals creating, step by step, the name Create & Live came to my mind.

So, I am starting a journey of exploring good habits, and I’d be thrilled if you join me on this trip. Because you know things that I don’t and vice versa. So why not support each other, share our successes, tips, tricks and mistakes valuable lessons and have some fun along the way?

I’m sure, you (just as much as I) would like to make the most out of your time on this beautiful place called Earth, so let’s challenge ourselves to become our best version. Are you in? I hope so!

Together, let’s see what’s possible and reach for our full potential while allowing us to rest without feeling guilty. We all need to be kinder to ourselves.

You see, only with some small changes, I am now pursuing a way better lifestyle than I used to only a couple of years ago. I’m so glad I made an effort to try new habits because it results in me being more creative, productive and balanced overall.

More energy, less frustration.

There’s no one-size-fits-all though, right? Please know that I don’t have all the answers to your questions. I am constantly experimenting and pivoting myself!

My most important WHY behind all of this is our kids. They are one of my biggest sources of inspiration and I’d like to be their role model and encourage them to go after their dreams. 

And here comes the punchline: Going after YOUR dreams is something only YOU can do.

You have to be willing to put some thought, time and energy into yourself in order to find out what it really is that you want for yourself. Because the thing is, no one else will or can do that for you. Only YOU have the power to try what works best for YOU and take action accordingly. I guess, this is also me, giving a pep-talk to myself here, haha!

Seriously though, if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed and simply don’t know where to start – you’re not alone! And this is where being part of a group of like-minded people can be so helpful.

Create & Live - the vision

Create & Live is supposed to be a safe virtual space where Creatives like you and me come together to get inspired and to support each other with building good habits in their work and life. Let’s cheer each other on, not only when it comes to building but also to maintaining healthy habits for the sake of our physical and mental well-being.
Because guess what? If you’re able to achieve a better work-life-balance, you will feel happier overall and spending more time in the state of happiness, automatically will fuel your creativity. Now, isn’t that great? At least, that’s how it’s been working for me…
