6 Essential Resources for Surface Pattern Designers

Your Go-To Guide for Inspiration and Growth

Hey there, creatives! If you’re diving into the world of surface pattern design, I’m so excited to share some of my favorite resources with you. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your designs to the next level, having the right resources can make all the difference. From building your network to discovering fresh inspiration, here are 6 essentials resources to help you on your journey. Let’s get started!

1. Online Design Communities

One of the best things about being a designer today is the amazing online communities available to us. If you’ve been feeling a bit isolated in your creative work, connecting with other designers can be a game-changer. Sharing ideas, getting feedback, and learning from others is incredibly inspiring—and it’s even better when you’re part of a supportive community.

That’s exactly why I created Create & Live, our little community of creatives. It’s a place for us to come together, inspire each other, and grow as designers. We have powerful questions to ask yourself, empowering affirmations and video chats with other Creatives about their day to day practices. It’s so energizing to know you’re not in this alone! Other online spaces like Skillshare and Dribbble are great too. They offer places to share your work, explore tutorials, and join discussions with designers from all over the world. Find a community that resonates with you and lean into it—you’ll be surprised how much it fuels your creativity.

2. Newsletters and Blog Posts

Keeping up with design trends, insights, and tutorials can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found that newsletters and blogs are perfect for staying informed without having to sift through tons of content. They deliver the latest right to your inbox, and some of them even feel like a mini masterclass! 

I love sharing insights, tips, and resources through my own blog because it helps me connect with all of you. Following these artists’ newsletters brings a steady stream of inspiration and practical tips that keep me motivated and learning. Find a few that inspire you and sign up—it’s an easy way to stay connected to the design world without having to search for it yourself.

3. Social Media

Let’s be real—social media is where so much of today’s creative conversation happens. No matter if you’d like to share your inspiration and process or display your finished pieces, social media can be a great tool to share your work, build your brand and connect with like-minded people. 

Instagram and Pinterest are especially helpful for surface pattern designers. Pinterest, in particular, is a fantastic tool for building mood boards and gathering inspiration. I recently created a Pinterest board called Surface Pattern Design Tips & Tricks, which is a collection of tips, tricks, and guides for surface pattern designers, offering everything from pattern design ideas and business advice to creative inspiration. Whether you’re looking for design tips or advice on navigating the business side of surface pattern design, this board has valuable resources for designers at all levels. You’re welcome to check it out and join in on the inspiration!

Following hashtags like #surfacepatterndesign or #printandpattern on Instagram can open up a world of beautiful design ideas and connect you with a global design community. Seeing how other designers work—and sharing a bit of my own process—helps keep the creativity flowing!

Beware to not get caught in a state of overwhelm, comparison or paralysis though—instead  figure out your very own healthy dose of social media to maintain peace of mind.

4. Online Marketplaces and Print On Demand Platforms

If you’re interested in selling your designs or licensing your work, marketplaces and print on demand platforms can be incredible resources. Sites like Spoonflower and Creative Market are amazing starting points for surface pattern designers. These platforms allow you to upload your designs, get them out into the world, and even make a little income from your work!

Many of these websites also offer trend reports, buyer insights, and market data, which can be incredibly helpful as you refine your style and determine which designs are resonating with audiences. Print on demand platforms can be a stepping stone toward bigger partnerships and collaborations, too—so keep your portfolio fresh and keep an eye on what’s trending.

5. Fabric, Stationery, and Craft Stores

There’s something magical about seeing your designs on a real, finished product like e.g. fabric or stationery—it is sooo rewarding! Although it takes a lot of work and persistence to make your vision come to life, it is totally possible. For evidence, see below how my design became alive on a finished product, a heating blanket.

Visiting fabric, stationery, or craft stores—whether in-person or online—can be an inspiring and joyful experience for both aspiring and experienced surface pattern designers. You get to feel different materials, see how colors pop on fabric, and imagine how your own designs might look in real life.

6. Nature: The Ultimate Muse

I’ve always found that stepping into nature is like stepping into a world of unlimited inspiration. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or a stroll through a botanical garden, nature has a way of feeding your creativity in ways nothing else can.

Bring a sketchbook or camera and capture the objects, colors, shapes, and textures you see around you. You might spot an unusual flower pattern or the intricate texture of a leaf that sparks a whole new design idea. Often, the organic shapes, flowing lines, and color palettes found in nature make their way into my patterns. It’s like nature quietly inspires us as we explore and reconnect with the world around us.

Whether you’re looking to build your skills, make connections, or find fresh inspiration, these resources can be your creative lifeline. Every designer has their own unique journey, so explore these ideas and see which ones resonate with you. And remember, whether you’re part of a thriving online community or taking a peaceful walk in nature, every step you take is helping you grow.
