Beat Procrastination

-
The 5-Minute Hack to Get You Moving

We’ve all been there — staring at that one dreaded task while suddenly deciding the fridge really needs reorganizing, your brushes could use a deep clean, or your entire portfolio obviously must be updated (but not today, right?). Or maybe it’s finally researching new clients to pitch — but first, you definitely need to watch just one more video about how to beat procrastination. (Oh, the irony.)

If procrastination were an Olympic sport, most of us would have a gold medal by now. But here’s the good news: beating procrastination doesn’t take superhuman willpower — it just takes a simple 5-minute hack to trick your brain into starting. I even used it to tackle my taxes (more on that in a bit).

How the 5-Minute Hack Helps You Beat Procrastination

Here’s the magic: tell yourself you’ll do it for just 5 minutes. That’s it. Not forever. Not until it’s perfect. Just five tiny, unthreatening minutes.

Why does this work? Because your brain loves to blow things out of proportion. It turns a simple task into Mount Everest. But once you start, you realize — oh, this isn’t so bad after all. Suddenly, the monster under the bed is just a lonely sock.

Why This Works So Well

✔️ It breaks the inertia. The hardest part of beating procrastination is starting. Once you’re in motion, staying in motion is easy (thanks, Newton).

✔️ It shrinks the task. Five minutes feels doable, so you skip the mental drama.

✔️ It tricks your brain. It feels so low-pressure that your brain slides right past the panic.

✔️ You usually keep going. Five minutes becomes ten, twenty — maybe you even finish the whole thing. And even if you stop, you’ve still done more than nothing.

A Quick Story: How I Beat Procrastination on My Taxes

This 5-minute trick actually saved me when I had to do my taxes — because let’s be honest, we can both think of at least a hundred things more fun than sorting receipts.

After weeks of procrastinating, I finally told myself: ‘Just sit down and start for 5 minutes.’ Five minutes later, I’d filled in the empty spreadsheet cells and just kept going — printing, filing, ticking things off. Once I got started, it was surprisingly easy to keep moving.

You’ll figure that most of the time, starting really is the hardest part. I still use this hack for all sorts of things I’d rather avoid — and every time, it works.

So if it worked for my taxes and for finally decluttering that nasty junk drawer, it can definitely work for whatever you’re putting off too.

Try the 5-Minute Hack Yourself

Next time you catch yourself procrastinating, remember this:

  1. Pick one tiny step.

  2. Set a timer for 5 minutes.

  3. Start.

  4. See where it takes you.

Worst case? You did 5 minutes more than nothing. Best case? You’re on a roll — and that “impossible” task is halfway done.

A Little Tool That Makes It Even Easier

I use a simple cube timer to manage my work and breaks—it’s been a game-changer for staying focused and keeping me on track. Our kids even picked up the habit! I’ll share more about this helpful tool and where to get it soon, so stay tuned.

Small Steps, Big Change

It’s amazing what a tiny shift can do to beat procrastination. Next time your brain whispers “Not now, maybe later…” — whisper back, “Just five minutes.”

You might surprise yourself.

Bonus Tip: Add Some Music or an Audiobook

If it’s a task that doesn’t need your full brainpower, make it more enjoyable by adding a soundtrack. I love putting on an audiobook or my favorite playlist when I’m unloading the dishwasher, folding laundry, or tackling other everyday chores.

This works wonders for those mindless-but-necessary work-life tasks too — like organizing your studio, sorting through old project files, prepping shipping labels for prints, or cleaning up your digital folders (goodbye, random screenshots!).

Of course, some tasks really do need your full focus — and sometimes music can do the opposite (especially if you catch yourself getting up to dance instead of working… been there, done that! 😂).

So try pairing the 5-minute hack with a good story or some motivating tunes, and see what works best for you. You might be surprised how quickly the boring bits fly by!

Now Ask Yourself:

What’s the one thing you’re putting off right now? You already know, right?
Now go do it for five minutes. I’m cheering you on!
